This planned community offers suburban living and is car-dependent. It is one of the newer communities in the city after being formed in 1975 and starting its housing construction in 1983. Today is it comprised of homes, hotels, restaurants, offices, and stores. Companies in this area include Scripps Health, The Allen Group, and Neurocrine Biosciences. Carmel Valley’s name comes from the Carmelite Sisters of Mercy, a group who built a monastery and dairy farm in the 1900s.
Several school districts serve this neighborhood with highly ranked facilities like Sycamore Ridge Elementary School, Carmel Valley Middle School, and Torrey Pines High School. There are hundreds of private institutions like the Calvary Christian Academy, Escondido Adventists Academy, the Montessori American School, and Halstrom Academy. Public universities include the University of California (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU) as well as the San Diego Community College District.
Residents are within minutes of the Palacio Del Mar Golf Course which offers a 9-hole par-3 course. Just to the south is the Grand Golf Course which features a Tom Fazio designed course, lodging, and a gourmet restaurant in a Mediterranean-style resort. It’s a short drive to the beaches as well as Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve which covers 2,000 acres of wilderness and protected land.
There are many merchants throughout this region. Along the 56 Freeway you will find many places to shop including the Piazza Carmel Shopping Center.
